Just Joking
I just nicked this off the Empire website:
"Why don't you love me no more, Jack?" Its the Joker, as he will look in the sequel to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight. Yes, this Joker:
And, you know what, I simply have no idea what to make of it. I just can't... summon an opinion of any sort. I know Nolan's films are meant to be dark and gritty, sure. But, you know, the films are still about a guy who, in the end, fights crime dressed like this:

But, you know, the films are still about a guy who, in the end, fights crime dressed like this:"Okay, I admit it! RedEye was not Hitchcockian at all!"
And can control bats with a device in his boot.
"The call of the Boot! I cannot resist it!"I mean, this was okay:
And this:
"Oi'm Falcone. Fowmewy of der Ant Hill Mob. Oi'm completely wealistic!"
And this:
"Oi'm Falcone. Fowmewy of der Ant Hill Mob. Oi'm completely wealistic!"But a Joker who looks anything approaching this...
"If you think this is over the top, you should watch The Departed."
"If you think this is over the top, you should watch The Departed."...is completely out of the question?
Having said that it does look pretty cool. And will probably work. And Nolan had such a supremely deft handle on the source material last time round, he could potentially craft a Joker who is both utterly memorable and utterly distinct from Nicholson's.
Heath Ledger, I still believe, could end up surprising us all. If you've not seen Brokeback, and, in that case, the first caption has completely gone over your head, take it from me: he can act. He's not just a pretty face. However, Brokeback did rely, perhaps, on the pretty face aspect too. Evidently, The Dark Knight won't. In any conceivable way.
Even so, the warning bells start ringing a little when comic book villains begin looking more like this:

The definitive Joker for me is always going to be the Batman: The Animated Series one. The designs, the writing and Mark Hamill's performance just fit perfectly.
I'm not against them taking a different tack on the Joker, but at the very least he'd better laugh maniacally. The Joker's a really fun character to use, and without the twisted comedy angle, he's just a psycho in facepaint.
... Though to be honest, my problems with that image can be summed up in four words:
He is not grinning.
And I'm sure that's not a permanent thing.
I'm looking forward to seeing what the approach is for this second film. I really enjoyed Batman Begins, whereas I really couldn't get into the 90s Batman films.
Oh, and the little Departed line made me grin like a loon.
